The Lawyer : "There was an important session this morning. Vina I had to compose a closing statement for it    If I had finished at 12 pm, I would have accompanied my husband to have lunch with his colleagues. "
Vina            : "I am sorry to hear that, madam. Sometimes we must give up to do all the things in the same time. "


The statement "if I had finished at 12 pm, I would have accompanied my husband to have lunch with his colleagues." is used to express an unfulfilled situation in the past. That is called conditional sentence type 3 . The fact that is that the lawyer did not finish the work at 12 pm, so he did not accompany her husband to have a lunch . The grammatical pattern of conditional type 3 is :

If + Subject + Past perfect, Subject + Future perfect (in the past)
Fact : Simple Past

Other examples :

1. If I had been able to speak English fluently, I would have got more information about woman's role.
Fact : I was not able to speak English fluently, so I was not a secretary in that office.

2. If I had joined the Seminar, I would have got more information about woman's role.
Fact : I did not joined the seminar, so I did not get more information about woman's role

3. Sita would not have a mistake if she had followed her teacher's instruction.
Fact : Sita did not follow the teacher's instruction, so he made mistake.

4. Dina would have been promoted as a director if she had been loyal to the company.
Fact : Dina was not promoted as a director because she was not loyal to the company.
