English Grammar : Relative Clause

Learn Grammar| English Grammar : Relative Clause | A relative clause tell us which person or thing (or what kind of person or thing) the speaker means. Relative clause can be recognized easily, because there is who,whom whose, which or that preceding it. Study the following explanation to make a relative clause.

1. Who /that
We use who or that in a relative clause when we are talking about people, but the people has to be subject in position.
example :
a. The old man is very friendly. He lives across the street.
- That the old man who lives across the street is very friendly.
b. I have many friends. They come from around the world.
- I have many friends who come from around the world.

c. The girls is very beautiful. She wears a pink dress.
- The girl that wears a pink dress is very beautiful.

2. Whom
Whom is used to replace the person when she/he is the object of the verb in a relative clause .

example :
a. Our teacher, miss santi, called Ferdi. we saw him in the library this morning.
-Our teacher , miss santi,called Ferdi whom we saw in the library this morning.

b. We like Dona. The teacher ask her to participate in English contest .
-We like Dona whom teacher asks to participate in English speech contest.

3. Whose
We use whose to show ownership and it replaces his/her/their.
example :

a. We are going to visit Deni. His house is big.
-We are going to visit Deni whose house is big

b. That girl looks happy. Her hair is long.
-That girl whose hair is long looks happy.

4. Which/that
When we are talking about thing, we can use which/that in a relative clause. Which/that replaces thing if the thing is in the object position.
example :
a. Someone took my diary . I put on the table.
-Someone took my diary that I put on the table

b. Mother is washing the red skirt . There is some dirt on it.
-Mother is washing the red skirt on which there is some dirt.
