AUXILIARY VERB
The definition of "Modal auxiliary verb" is a group of auxiliary verbs, which complements (adds to) the meaning of the verb (main verb) a sentence. Thus the function of modal is to increase the meaning of the verb that follows.
example :
  1. Anna can swim
  2. I should study hard.
Things that need to be considered in the modal auxiliary verb:
1. Modal was never in the form-ing or past, and never have the suffix-s.
It thus applies to all forms of sentence subject either single or plural without undergoing a process of affixation. (without adding-s)

2. In the sentence construction, modal can be arranged in two ways :
a. Modal + Verb 1
example :
  • He can go drive carefully
  • You must know your obligation
  • It would be better to study English.
b.Modal + Have + Verb 3
example :
  • Gandhi could have gone to school
  • Sanggam should have finished his homework
  • He could have been angry with me.
3. Modal placed right after the subject, the statement and at the beginning of the sentence in yes / no question.
example :
  • I can write well.
  • Can you write well?
4. In the negative form we add "not" after these modals. Modal + not can be written in full or shortened.
example :
cannot : can't
would not : wouldn't
will not : won't
shall not : shan't
should not : shouldn't
must not : mustn't
