Definition of Linguistic

Education English | Definition of Linguistic | In order to understand about linguistics, it is very important to know the meaning of it from some linguists. According to Widdowson (1996: 3) linguistics is the name given to the discipline which studies human language. While John (1981: 37) states that linguistic is usually defined as the science of language or, alternatively, as the scientific study of language. Whereas, Palmer (1981: 6) defines that linguistics is the scientific study of language. A scientific study must be empirical; it must be possible, in some way, to test and verify the statements made within it.
In addition to the previous definition, Allen (1975: 16) states that linguistics may be defined as the scientific study of language. This apparently straightforward definition conceals a wide divergence of views about what is meant by ‘scientific’. It is simply that a scientific study is one which is based on the systematic investigation of data, conducted with reference to some general theory of language structure.
Verhaar (1993: 1 – 6) in his book states that the word ‘linguistics’ is from Latin ‘Lingua’ meaning ‘language’, then he defines that linguistics is the knowledge of language. He adds his explanation, that linguistics has several disciplines; they are a) Phonetics is the study of the production and perception of speech sounds. b) Phonology is the study of the sound patterns of language. It is concerned with how sounds are organized in a language. c) Morphology is the study of word formation and structure. It studies how words are put together from their smaller parts and the rules governing this process. d) Syntax is the study of sentence structure.
In conclusion, although the linguists have proposed many kinds of definitions of linguistics, but they still agree that linguistics is the study of language and when we engage in the study of language so we actually involve in the language itself.
