Concept of Word Formation

Education English | Concept of Word Formation | Word formation is the creation of a new word. Word formation is sometimes contrasted with semantic change, which a change in a single word's meaning (Bussmann, 1996: 1). The line between word formation and semantic change is sometimes a bit blurry; what one person views as a new use of an old word, another person might view as a new word derived from an old one and identical to it in form.
Word formation can also be contrasted with the formation of idiomatic expressions, though sometimes words can form from multi-word phrases. Hornby (2000: 477) says that word means remark or statement. Word also means sound or combination of sounds forming a unit of the grammar odd vocabulary of a language. While formation means something that has been formed. Mc Arthur (2009: 1) word-formation is the formation of longer, more complex word from shorter, simpler words. So the writer makes a conclusion that, the meaning of word formation means the creation of a new word or the formation of word.
