English Grammar : The Present Participle

Education English | English Grammar : The Present Participle | The Present Participle used after verbs of perception.
Pattern : Subject + Verb of Perception + Object + Present Participle

Verbs of perception :
see, hear, smell, feel, watch, look (at), listen (to), notice, observe.
Other verbs which have the same pattern :
keep, leave, find, catch

Example :
Last night I couldn't sleep. I didn't know why. I went downstairs to the kitchen and heated the leftover soup. Suddenly, I heard people talking in the yard. I saw them trying to open the front door. Then I found them taking the TV set. I cried , "Thief !" there is a thief " . Everyone woke up. The thieves ran away. They left the house bringing nothing. I was happy, but then I smelt something burning. Agh..the soup was overcooked.!

Certain verbs of perception are followed by either Vbase or V-ing (the present participle). There is a little in meaning between the two forms.
Example  :
1. I saw Tom driver the car. (I saw the complete action, from beginning to end)
2. I saw Tom driving  the car. ( I saw him when he was driving )
