Epigram and Irony

According to Wren and Martin (1979:492) epigram is a statement which is brief pointed saying frequently introducing antithetical idea which excites surprise and arrest attention. The example of epigram;
a. The child is father of the man
b. A man can‟t be too careful in the choice of his enemies
c. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread
Furthermore, epigram is originally meant an inscription or epitaph, usually in verse, on a building, tomb, or coin (Nordquist, 2011)
2. Irony
Wren and Martin (1979:492) state that irony is a mode of speech in which the real meaning is exactly the opposite of the fact. Furthermore, Wren and Martin exemplifies of irony are:
a. No doubt but ye are the people and wisdom shall die with you
b. Jim and Scout are saved by Boo Radley, who had ironically been an object of fear and suspicion to them at the beginning of the novel.
The word ironical in the second example, “Jim and Scout are saved by Boo
Radley, who had ironically been an object of fear and suspicion to them at the beginning of the novel”, it shows that the sentence has irony.
