Type of Preposition

Education English | Type of Preposition |  According to Loberger and Shoup (2009: 111) there are three types of prepositions such as, simple preposition, participial preposition, and phrasal preposition.
1. Simple preposition
A simple preposition is made up of either a simple or compound word, as in the following: up, down, in, into, from, to, with, inside, around, before, upon, along, without. Sometimes preposition formed from two words, such as inside, and before are we called complex preposition because they have the form of complex words.
2. Participial preposition
Participial preposition is look like verbs (the ing form) but function as preposition. They include as followings:
- assuming - following
- barring - including
- beginning - involving
- considering - regarding
3. Phrasal preposition
A phrasal preposition is, as its name suggests, a unit of two or more words serving as a single preposition (these types of prepositions are also called compound preposition).

The following are a few of these word groups:
- by way of - in front of
- in place of - by means of
- in spite of - in contrast to
- in case of - with regard to
- on behalf of - in comparison with
