Synecdoche

Education English | Synecdoche | “In Synecdoche a part is used to designate the whole or the whole to designate a part”, (Wren and Martin, 1979:494).
1. Part used to designate the whole
The examples of part used to designate the whole;
a. Give us this day our daily bread
b. All the best brains in Europe would not solve the problem.
c. We are sixty souls here in the room.
Bread in this sentence “Give us this day our daily bread” means food. While, “all the best brains in Europe would not solve the problem”. The meaning of “best brains” in this sentence means government. “We are sixty souls here in the room”. The meaning of “sixty souls” is sixty people.
2. The whole used to designate a part
The examples of the whole used to designate a part;
a. England won the first test match against Australia
b. Bless of god during the smiling year
England in this sentence “England won the first test match against
Australia” means the name of the team (the English cricket eleven) from England not the name of the country.
