Etherton (1973:203) explains that centuries ago, people used to study a subject called rhetoric which is the art of expressing their selves well in writing or in speech. In the early books on Rhetoric, the ancient teachers listed many „figures of speech‟ which potential orators and lawyers to make their speeches more interesting or impressive. Etherton‟s explanations prove that how the importance
of figurative speech is, potential orators and lawyers use figure of speech to make their speech more impressive and interesting in order to catch the listener‟s attention. In the fact, not only orators and lawyer, nowadays, figures of speech are also used in poetry, novel, and song lyrics. Figure of speech is often used for several purposes. It can be used to clarify meaning, emphasize the listener or reader, provide vivid description, stimulate association and emotion, amuse the listener or the reader, give life to in animate object, beautify the sentences, and so on (Purnama, 2012:2). The interesting words will stimulate an image in listener‟s mind and it can help the listeners to think about what it looks like, sound and feel.
