Education English | The Nature of Translation | Actually translation is not one of the four language skills : listening, speaking, reading and writing. The ability in reading is important because it is basic for achieving the ability in translation, while the one need to know the translation of words, sentences, phrase, paragraph or discourse, first of all the one should read the source text carefully. Here the ability of reading will be so important to get the best result of translation.
The ability in listening is also important because while the one need to translate another language from the native speaker, the one will need their ability in listening very much.
After the one use their ability in reading or listening, they also need their ability in speaking or writing to find the best choices words or sentence to change the source language into target language, so the meaning of the words or sentence will be understood by the other people.
In other words, we can say that the mastery of these four skills facilitate the mastery of translation.
Translation is basically a change of form. When we speak of the form of a language, we are referring to the actual words, phrases, clauses, sentences, paragraph, etc, which are spoken or written. From Oxford The Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English1995, we know that the meaning of “to translate” is to change sentence spoken or written in another language.
Eugene a Nida (1969:12) in Hariyanto Sugeng (1997) says that translation consists of producing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the message of the source language, first in term of meaning and second in term of style.
