Period (.)

Education English | Period (.) | Harvey (2008: 245) says that the period denotes the greatest degree of
separation.
1. The period should be placed at the end of a declarative or imperative sentence
Examples: Contrivance proves design.
Study diligently.
2. The period should be placed at the end of every abbreviated word
Example: H. M. Swainson
No. 209
According to Surayin (1999: 508), period is used:
1. The period should be placed at the end of statement, asking or requesting.
Examples: Robert has travelled a great deal.
Open the window, please.
2. The period should be placed at the end of initial or abbreviated
Examples: Mr. Robert F. Gordon left his card.
The train will arrive at Washington,D.C., at 2:30 p.m
According to McCaskill (1998: 66-68), the period is a mark separation. It is primary purpose is to separate complete thought, to mark the end of declarative and imperative sentences. (Interrogative sentence end with a question mark; exclamatory, with an exlamation point.) The key word here is complete; a period should be used only after a sentence complete with subject and predicate.
1. Abbreviations
A period may follow abbreviations except those for units of measure.
Examples: No. 215
Mr. John
2. Conventional Uses of the Period
The period is so useful for separation that conventional uses exist:
• A period precedes decimal number:
0.2 .29.34
• A period separates dollars and cents:
$6.50 but 50 cents
• In enumarations, a period usually follows the number or other
designator:
Volume I. Theory

• Periods are used in section number
. 1. Introduction
3. Place period before closing quotation marks.
The operator presses the letter n to indicate “no” and the letter to indicate “yes.”
The word pultruded is defined to mean the opposite of “extruded.”
