The function of dialogue

Education English | The function of dialogue | There are many functions of dialogue stated by experts. One of them is stated by Cronkite (2004) that dialogue gives a subject a special interest and life by turning a discourse into a discussion, and dialogue are also an easy way to explore various points of view simply by embodying these points of views in different people in the dialogue. In this case, the dialogue is one of the suitable techniques to guide the students to speak up or participate in the learning process especially to the silent students. Therefore, the dialogue can be a way of eliciting participation by the silent students, because they can actually speak and engage in discussion but without the risk of saying something wrong. However dialogue is different with discussion. As Mulvaney (1990) explains that dialogue is not merely discussion, discussion, or what we may call the sharing of opinions, carries with it the possibility.
The above description shows that the use of dialogue is very important especially for educational purpose it means that it is hoped to able to make the students speak English actively among the students moreover when it is performed in front of the class without being afraid of making mistakes. Another important function is that the use of dialogue actually can increase the students’ confidence and also improve their communicative competence especially speaking ability. As it is explained by Power (2003) that the students can gain confidence in speaking through using scripted dialogue.
Creating an English environment in the classroom can be reached by providing a dialogue because there will be an interaction between the students and their friends, and then they can correct each other if they make mistakes. A dialogue also helps the students to have their higher motivation to learn English because they get free to express their ideas or opinions through dialogue.
It’s supported by Scott and Ytreberg (1990) that working with dialogue is a useful way to bridge the gap between guided practice and freer activities it means that controlled dialogue can easily develop into free work when the students are ready for it. Putting the students into pairs for doing the dialogue is a simple way of organizing even in large classes.
Finally, a dialogue can be one of the suitable techniques in guiding the students in classroom management. It can motivate and encourage the students to speak up and participate in the learning process. It also enables them not only improving the students’ communicative competence especially in speaking ability but also building self confidence so that they won’t get afraid of making mistakes in producing English.
