Quotation Marks (“ “)

Education English | Quotation Marks (“ “) | Langan (2008: 558) says that quotation marks are punctuation marks that indicate exact words or the titles of short works. The two main uses of quatation
marks are:
1. To set off the exact words of a speaker or writer
Examples: “I feel as though I’ve been here before,” Angie murmured to her husband. (quotation marks set off the exact words that Angie spoke to her husband.)
2. To set off the titles of short works
Example: The essay “On Self-Respect”
The article “The Problem of Acid Rain”
According to Surayin (1999: 511), quotation mark is used:
1. Direct sentences from speaker are put in quotation mark
Example : “I am going for a walk,” she said.
He asked, “Are you going?”
2. The title of poetry, story, article and etc. is put in quotation mark
Example : We read Walt Whitman’s “O Captain, My captain” last night.
“The Blue Danube” is still a popular waltz
