There are three kinds of reported speech :
Command :
He asked me, “go away”!
He told me to go away.
Prohibition
she asked me. “ don’t come late”
she warned me not to come late.
Note : the reporting verbs that are used to report imperative sentence are : tell, order, command, ask, warn, remind.
Positive :
- Present tense Past Tense
He said, “I want to buy a car.” He said that he wanted to buy a car.
- Past tense Past Perfect
He said “I missed the train” He said that he had missed the train.
- Present Continous Past Continous tense
He said “ I am lerning English “ He said that he was learning English
- Present Perfect tense Past Perfect Tense
He said “ My father has gone to his office” He said that his father had gone to his office
Question :
- Yes-No question
e.g : Mother asked me,” Do you like cakes?
Mother asked me wheter I liked cakes.
- Question word
e.g : Shinta asked, “what is your name?”
Shinta wanted to know what my name is.
In time expressions and pronouns :
1. now = then
2. today/tonight = that day/that night
3. yesterday = the day before
4. tomorrow = the next/the following
5. last week = the previous week
6. next week = the following week
7. ago = before
8. this/these = that / those
9. here = there
