Oxymoron

Education English | Oxymoron |  Wren and Martin (1979:491) state that oxymoron is two contradictory qualities are predicted at once of the same thing. The examples of oxymoron according to Wren and Martin, they are:
a. She accepted it as the kind cruelty of surgeon‟s knife
b. So innocent-arch, so cunningly simple

Meanwhile, according to Etherton (1973:203), oxymoron is the use of two contrasting ideas or words to create a rather starling effect or unusual. It is special form of antithesis. Other examples of oxymoron are:
a. His air was one of friendly hostility.
b. He played in a crudely skilful sort of way.
c. It is bittersweet memories.
The phrase „bittersweet‟ in the sentence “It is bittersweet memories” is a phrase that has opposite words, bitter and sweet. The next example is “His air was one of friendly hostility”. The phrase friendly hostility is contrasting words.
