English Grammar : Prefix

Education English | Prefix | According to Hornby (1987 :677), prefix is syllable, e.g. pre-, co, place in front of the word to add change its meaning. He states that a prefix is a word part that is added at the beginning of a word of word-part called the base, to make a new word. Un likes suffixes, which often change the base from one word class to another, prefixes usually change the meaning of the base but not part of speech. (There is one exception to this general rule ; rule prefix on-, or em-, which form verbs). In general, prefixes are easier to understand than suffixes, since their meaning more definite.
So from the definition above, the writer concluded that the prefix is a group of letters which is put on beginning of a basic word, and can change it’s meaning.
Gatherer (1989: 122) defines that the verbs are words of group of words to denote action performed by noun, pronoun, or the state of being of a noun or pronoun. e.g., was he happy about the charge? No, I thing he was unhappy about it. Rein (1989: 472) claims that verbs are the hearts of most sentences. Geoffrey (1990: 454) defines that a prefix is an element which we place at the front of a word. Legget, mead and charvat in their handbook for writers (1951: 523) prefix is one or more syllable, such as, a-, miss-, re-, sub-, or-, un-, that can be added at beginning of a word or root to change its meaning. e.g. I had to pack my suitcase (put cloth, etc., in it) very quickly, so when I unpacked (took everything out) at the hotel, most of my clothes looked terrible.
Mc Carthy ( 1988: 54) states that prefix (at the beginning of words) do not generally alter the word class of the base. Productive prefixes normally have a light stress on their first (or only) syllable.
From the definition above, the writer could conclude that one of the ways of forming a new word in English is by adding a prefix to the root of word. So prefix is a short form, consisting of one or two syllables, modifier that meaning of the word to which it is added. So it very important for us to study about especially verbs using negative prefix.
