Education English | The Concept of Errors and Mistakes | Based on Hornby (1995:390,746), error is the state of being wrong in belief or behavior. It is used when talking about calculations, and in technical or formal contexts. Corder (1981:36) states that the description of error is a linguistic operation. Errors are described by the application of linguistic theory to the data or erroneous produced by a learner or a group of learners.
Ellis (1997:17) states that the errors reflect gaps in learner knowledge; they occur because the learner does not know what is correct.
According to Hornby (1995:746), mistake is an action or opinion that is foolish or wrong. It is the most general and used in most situations. Corder (1981:10) states that mistakes are of no significance to the system of the language learning. Ellis (1997:17) states that mistakes reflect occasional lapses in performance; they occur because in a particular instance, the learner is unable to perform what he/she knows.
