Noun And Verb Phrase

Noun phrase
A noun phrase consist of noun and all the words and word groups that belong with the noun and cluster around it. The noun itself is called the headword or head, and the other words or word groups are modifiers of the noun. Examples :
The yellow tulips
The yellow tulips in the garden
The yellow tulips in the garden which were gaily blooming

In these example tulips is a head. Of the rest of the words the modifiers we observe that the single word modifiers like the and yellow, precede the head and that word group modifiers.

Verb Phrase
A verb phrase consist of a verb and all the words and word groups that belongwith the verb and cluster around it. The verb itseld is called the headword or head and the other words and word groups are the auxiliaries, modifiers and complements of the verb. Complement is the generic system term for the completers of the verb, which we shall later learn to know as direct object, indirect object, objective complement and subjective complement.
Examples :
· Soon arrived
· Arrived late
· Soon arrived at the station
· Arrived just as the plane came in
· Was waiting at the door
· May have been stolen by the cashier

· Buit his son a scooter
· Seemed gloomy and dejected
