Syllepsis

Education English | Syllepsis | Etherton (1973:209) states that “syllepsis is the use of one word to govern two others but with a change in its sense”. One of the examples of syllepsis is;
a. He lost the game and his temper
b. She went home in a flood of tears and a sedan chair
The second example requires “a flood of tears” to be taken figuratively and “a sedan chair” to be taken literally. She went home is suitable with sedan chair. It doesn‟t make a sense if she went home with a flood of tears. It means that she went home drive a car while crying. Moreover, Eighner (2012) says that the effect of syllepsis is usually humorous. It is the sudden change of sense seems double meanings such as puns. Syllepsis is appropriate to humor and satire with ironic tone and to any writing.
