Speaking : Expressing the Result of Sense

Education English | Speaking : Expressing the Result of Sense | Before we study the following lesson, we would better know the first the symbols of English verbs that we will use to explain the pattern. In that way, we will understand the topic we are going to discuss better.
English verbs have five forms : the base , the -s form, the past, the -ing participle and the -ed participle . The symbols and the examples of these forms are given in the table below :

FORM
SYMBOL
EXAMPLE
Base
-s form (3rd person singular present )
Past
-ing participle (present participle)
-ed participle (past participle )

V
V-s
V-ed1
V-ing
V-ed2
Call, drink, put
Calls, drinks, puts
Called, drunk, put
Calling, drinking, putting
Called, drunk, put

For the regular verb, the past form (V-ed1) and the -ed participle have the same -ed inflection (changes).
For example : call-called; walk-walked.
For the irregular verb, the past form (V-ed) and the -ed participle have varied inflections (changes)
For example : drink-drank-drunk ; get-got-gotten ; put-put-put; spoke-spoke-spoken.
To know whether the verb is regular or irregular, we have to look it up in dictionary.
There are five main verbs used to express the result of senses. They are : to see, to hear, to smell, to taste, and to touch.
example :
  • I see a lot of people in the gallery.
  • I heard them arguing.
  • Andi, you smell bad, go and wash yourself.
From the sentences above we can make some basic patterns :
1. Somebody who sees/hears/etc something
  •  S(speaker) + V (sense) + O (someone else )
  •  S (speaker) + V (sense) + O (something) + V-ing.
  •  S (speaker) + V (sense) +  O (something)
2. Something which is seen/ heard/tasted/smelt.

S (speaker) + V (sense) + adj.

example :
The Ice cream taste delicious.
Beside the five verbs of sense, other verbs that can be used to express senses are : observe, look, watch, listen, to notice, sound, seem, stare, feel and sense.
