Education English | About Narrative Text | Narrative has been taught to all people in the world. Narrative could be in form, of story such as fairytales, legends, plays, science fiction, myths, cartoons, adventure stories, etc. A narrative text is an account of events. It tells a story. (http://www.wikipedia.html)
The basic purpose of narrative is to entertain, to gain and hold a readers' interest. However narratives can also be written to teach or inform, to change attitudes / social opinions eg soap operas and television dramas that are used to raise topical issues. Narratives sequence people/characters in time and place but differ from recounts in that through the sequencing, the stories set up one or more problems, which must eventually find a way to be resolved. Creative narrative writing has a plot, a setting (where and when the story happens), and characters who have motives (reasons) for what they do. Good narrative writing is more than a list of random events. It has a problem to be solved or a challenge to be overcome. There is a point to the story. (http://www.writingd_2.htm,)
The steps to teach narrative writing. The first step, assign short stories, narrative essays, or both for them to read. The second step, analyze the structure of several different pieces of narrative writing. Short narrative nonfiction is ideal, since it can be used as a model for both. The third step, have students write several short, informal response pieces to narrative essays or stories. The forth step, have the class take their response pieces to the next level. Tie the assignment to the reactions they have been writing and the compositions they have been reading. The fifth step, give the students plenty of practice of narrative writing.
