Narrative Text : The Caliph and the Clown

Education English | Narrative Text : The Caliph and the Clown | The Caliph of Baghdad hired an intelligent and high spirited man as his court jester, and was much amused by his clever, witty comments. The clown was so well loved by his master that everyone at court showed him great respect. And so the Caliph was much surprised one day when he heard his beloved clown crying out in distress from the throne room. The Caliph hurried there and was astonished to find the guards beating the clown badly.
“Leave him alone at once!” he ordered. “Why are you beating him?”
“We found him sitting on your throne, O majesty!” the captain of the guards explained.
“out of my sight!” commanded the Caliph. “For sure the jester did not do it with the intention of offending me.”
The clown, however, continued to weep and wail even after the guards had left. “Stop it! Said the irritated Caliph.
“You’re still in one piece, aren’t you?
“I’m not crying for myself, my lord, I weep for you,” the clown explained.
“For me?” exclaimed the Caliph in surprise.
“Certainly! If I get beaten so badly for having been only a few minutes on the throne, how many beatings must you have suffered in all the years that you have been there?”

Narrative Text : The Frog Prince

Education English | Narrative Text : The Frog Prince | One  fine evening a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, and went out to take a walk by herself in a wood; and when she came to a cool spring of water with a rose in the middle of it, she sat herself down to rest a while.

Now she had a golden ball in her hand, which was her favourite plaything; and she was always tossing it up into the air, and catching it again as it fell. After a time she threw it up so high that she missed catching it as it fell; and the ball bounded away, and rolled along on the ground, until at last it fell down into the spring. The princess looked into the spring after her ball, but it was very deep, so deep that she could not see the bottom of it. She began to cry, and said, "Alas! If I could only get my ball again, I would give all my fine clothes and jewels, and everything that I have in the world."

Whilst she was speaking, a frog put its head out of the water, and said,

"Princess, why do you weep so bitterly?"
"Alas!" Said she, "What can you do for me, you nasty frog? My golden ball has fallen into the spring." The frog said, "I do not want your pearls, and jewels, and fine clothes; but if you will love me, and let me live with you and eat off your golden plate, and sleep on your bed, I will bring you your ball again."

Narrative Text : A Story about Red

Education English | Narrative Text : A Story about Red | "Rosaura! Rosaura!"  If you were tall enough, you might have seen a little splash of red in the tall grass. And if you had looked closer you might have seen a small girl wearing a red ribbon.

Rosaura was hiding from her mother and father. It was her favourite game. She crouched quietly, listening to the faint sound of her mother's voice. All Rosaura could see were the swaying green stalks of the corn. They rustled above her head where the sky stretched clear and blue. Suddenly, a bright yellow butterfly darted by. Rosaura jumped up to chase the butterfly, forgetting all about her hiding game.
"Rosaura! There you are," called her mother. "It's time for lunch."

It was dark and cool in the cottage where Rosaura lived with her parents. Rosaura ate her meal quickly. She wanted to go back into the sunshine to play. As soon as she had finished her food she slipped down from her chair.

"Rosaura, where are you going?" called her mother.

She caught a glimpse of Rosaura's red ribbon disappearing around the door. But Rosaura was already through the gate, and heading for the fields.

"Rosaura! Rosaura!" Was that the sound of her mother calling, or the wind whispering in the corn? Rosaura was not sure. All day long through the hot summers she loved to run in the fields. Her feet were scratched and her toes bruised on stones as she chased after the mice hiding in the corn stalks. Her skin was brown as a nut from the sun. In her tangled black hair, her red ribbon fluttered.

The afternoon stretched out long and hot. As the sun reached the far side of the field, Rosaura's father walked back to the cottage. His eyes scanned the fields for Rosaura's red ribbon. But it was nowhere to be seen.

"Hasn't Rosaura come back yet?" asked her father as he came through the door.

"Not yet," said her mother, "I'm sure she'll be back soon." But the supper was ready and still there was no sign of Rosaura. Now the sun had set, casting a red glow over the fields. Rosaura's mother and father stood at the door of their cottage, staring over the field, looking for the red ribbon.

"Rosaura! Rosaura!" Soon the shadows were deep blue in the yard. It was too dark to see the red ribbon now. Rosaura's parents began to walk and call for her in the field. As night fell, they fetched lamp that lit up patches of corn and grass and startled the sleeping mice. But they could find no red ribbon.

Rosaura's parents called and called all through the night. In the dawn, they stood alone and sad amongst the corn. The red morning sun lit up their tired faces.

"Look!" cried Rosaura's mother suddenly. "There she is!"

They began to run towards the red ribbon that she had spotted among the corn. But oh! It wasn't Rosaura's ribbon at all, but the red petals of a flower. Rosaura's mother and father had never seen such a flower before. Her father looked away in disappointment.

"I see her!" he cried.

And again they ran towards the dear red ribbon. But it was another red flower. As the sun came up bright and strong, Rosaura's mother and father looked around the field. It was filled with red flowers swaying and fluttering in the tall grass. Rosaura's mother and father felt so sad.

"Rosaura won't be coming home anymore," said her mother. "She was always happier in the fields."

"But the spirits have left us these flowers to remind us of her," said Rosaura's father.

"They will stay with us!" Every year, when the corn ripened and the evenings grew long, Rosaura's parents stood at the edge of the fields and watched the red flowers dancing under the sun. And that, say the Indians, is how the red poppy came to be.

Narative Text

There was once a mouse traveling through forest. Before he knew, it was trotting over the paws of sleeping lion. The lion woke up and grabed the mouse in his sharp caws.
“Please do not eat me !” begged the mouse. “I’ll never bother you again. And who knows? I may be able to do you a good turn day.”
The lion laughed, “You are too small to help a big lion! But I like your spirit. Run along now, and stay out of trouble in the future.” The grateful mouse scampered off.
Sometime later, the lion ran into a trap and found himself caught in a strong net. The more he struggled he tighter the rope became.
Soon the poor lion lay compeletely helpless.
Suddenly he heard a little voice “ can I help you ?” It was the mouse.
The lion shook his head sadly.” I am afraid the hunters will be along soon. That will be the end of me.”
“No, it will not” said the mouse. He started chewing through the rope. Bit by bit the net fell of, and at least the lion was free.
“How can I thank you ?” asked the lion
“One good turn deserves another” replied the mouse. “But just remember size, is not everything.

Narrative text : The Magic Headcloth

Education English | Narrative text : The Magic Headcloth | Many, many years ago, the kingdom of Medangkamulan was ruled by a much feared and ferocious king named Dewata-chengkar. This king had a strange and frightening habit–he liked to eat human beings! At first, the advisers took people from the countries they had conquered, but eventually they had to look for victims from among their own people.

The people of Medangkamulan were terrified of the king and his army. One day, a young traveler arrived in the kingdom. He was kind and clever and was well–received by the villagers. He was called Ajisaka. Ajisaka took shelter in the house of a widow who quickly came to look upon the young man as her own son. Ajisaka began to teach the villagers. He also listened to the villagers' problems and often helped them find solutions.

When he heard of the king's strange appetite, Ajisaka sympathized with their plight and immediately volunteered to become the king's next meal. Ajisaka went directly to the king's palace. He boldly announced to the king that he was willing to sacrifice himself.

“I am willing to be your next meal. Your Highnees. However, I have a request “Whatever you please, young man, I will grant your request,“ the king replied.

“Before you eat me, grant me some land. Just enough for my own grave.“
“Ha ha ha! Your own grave? I will give you enough land for many graves!“
“Oh no, Your Majesty. I just need land that is the length of my own head cloth.“
“This you shall have. Come, let us measure your head cloth so that I can have my meal and you can have your grave!“ With this, Ajisaka began to unwrap the cloth tied around his head. The king got down from his throne and took hold of one end. He stepped backward, thinking that the cloth would unravel to the usual length of one meter. What he didn't know was that this head cloth was much longer than usual! The king kept going backward, step by step, as the cloth kept unraveling. He stepped backward through the palace square, backward across the village marketplace, backward down the length of the village and backward through the countryside.People gathered, amazed at the sight of their king walking backward through the kingdom, holding the end of Ajisaka's head cloth. He kept stepping backward the length of his kingdom until finally he reached the sea clifts of the Southern Seas. By now, a great crowd had gathered.

They held their breath as their king took his final step backward over the cliff's edge and plunged into the waves crashing againts the rocks at the foot of the sea wall. A victorious roar rose up as they watched their greedy king disappear under the waves.

The crowd returned to the palace with Ajisaka and thanked him for his courage, cunning, and magical powers. They made him their new king. To this day, Ajisaka is remembered as the wise ruler who later brought the knowledge of letters to the Javanese.

Narrative Text : The Elves and the Shoemaker

Education English | Narrative Text : The Elves and the Shoemaker | “Can’t you work any faster, my dear?” said the shoemaker’s wife anxiously. The shoemaker smiled: “Oh, I could work faster,” he said. “I could cut out the leather for my shoes less neatly, and I could sew with bigger stitches. But I like to give the customers my very best workmanship. And that takes time.”

“I know, dear, but there’s no money left over to buy more leather. You work so carefully that it takes you two days to make one pair of shoes.”
“I’m doing my best,” said the shoemaker sadly. “My eyesight isn’t as good as it was and my fingers aren’t so quick.”

The shoemaker continued to do his slow, careful best. But there was soon no money leftto buy leather, and all his hides and suedes were used up. Only one scrap of leather was left on his workbench.

“What shall we do tomorrow when there’s no leather to sew and when there are no more shoes to sell?” asked his wife. The shoemaker smiled. “ Well, let’s worry about that tomorrow.” He spent all day cutting out a pair of shoes from the last of the leather. “These are probably the last shoes I shall ever make,” he thought, “so they must be my best.” When he went to bed, he left the cut-out shapes on his workbench.

“I’m sorry we are so poor, my dear,” he said to his wife as he climbed into bed.

“You can only do your best,” she said comfortingly. “You can’t do any more.” In the morning, the shoemaker cleaned his glasses and threaded his needle around for the pieces of leather. But something amazing had happened. A fi nished pair of shoes stood in the centre of the bench, perfect to the last shiny buckle. Someone had made the shoes for him, overnight.

“Just look at the workmanship!” he exclaimed, showing them to his wife. “And look at the beautiful tiny stitches! Who could have made them?”

The shoes were so well made that they sold for twice the usual price. So the old shoemaker was able to buy a new strip of leather and cut out two pairs of shoes during the day. At night he left the cut-out shapes on his workbench and went to bed a much more cheerful man. In the morning, the two pairs of shoes were completely fi nished, right down to the tags on their laces.

“What a craftsmanship!” said the shoemaker to his wife. The shoes brought such a good price that this time he was able to buy enough leather for four pair of shoes. And the next night, the mysterious visitors sewed all four pairs.

”Such perfect cobbling!” exclaimed the customers. And they came from miles around to buy the shoemaker’s wares. There were long, glossy riding boots for the men and pretty velvet dancing shoes for the ladies. “We have enough leather for a lifetime!” said the shoemaker’s happy wife. “And so many people come here to buy their shoes that we are almost rich!”

But the shoemaker was thinking. “Wouldn’t you like to know who is helping us every night? It’s time we found out.”

So one cold night, just before Christmas, the shoemaker left the cut-out leather on his workbench, then he and his wife hid nearby. As midnight struck, out from behind the clock crept six naked little elves. They climbed on to the bench and went to work at once, sewing and hammering and lacing and polishing. Every now and then they stopped to blow into their cold hands or stamp their cold feet or hug themselves  against the chilly night air. They were shivering blue from head to foot.

“Poor little mites,” said the shoemaker’s wife. “All that work for us and they haven’t got a shirt or even a pair of boots.”
“Well, after all they’ve done for us, we ought to give them a thank-you present,” said the shoemaker.

The next day hi wife was soon busy cutting out little shirts and trousers from some bright warm cloth. The shoemaker took out his fi nest needle and softest leather and made a handsome pair of boots for each elf.

On Christmas night, they left their presents on the workbench and hid as they had done before. It was bitterly cold. When the six little elves appeared, they were shuddering and shivering, and their breath turned white in the frosty air.

They were confused at fi rst, when they could fi nd no boot leather to sew. But when they saw the clothes and realized that they were for them, they put them on and danced about, laughing and clapping their hands inside their new woolly mittens.

“No more cobbling for us! We’re smart fellows now!” And they all sang as they danced out the shop and down the street.
“So! No more help from the elves,” said the shoemaker’s wife, laughing. “How will you manage now that so many people come to you for their shoes and boots?” The shoemaker smiled. “I’ll just have to do my best,” he said.

“I’m sure you will, my dear,” said his wife.
“You always do.”

Narrative Text : The Jealous Crow

Education English | Narrative Text : The Jealous Crow | Far, far away there was a grove of shady mango trees. On one of the green trees there lived a cuckoo and a crow. They were quite alike in appearance. Both the birds were black. Only the crow was a little bigger. The cuckoo would lay all her eggs in the crow's nest. For quite sometime they lived as good friends. The cuckoo had a sweet voice and often she would fill the grove with her sweet melody.

One day, a traveler passed by. Night fell and there was darkness all around. The traveler was tired. So he decided to spend the night under the huge mango tree on which the crow and the cuckoo lived. The night was exceedingly pleasant. Full moon was shedding her lone clustre in the sky. The eerie surrounding made the cuckoo feel supremely happy. She kept singing the whole night long and the passerby was simply captivated by cuckoo's sweet song. Night passed. The day dawned. It was now the crow's turn to caw. His voice was so harsh to the ears that the traveller soon left the place. When the crow saw the traveller leave the place, in disgust he felt jealous of the sweet-voiced bird. When the cuckoo had gone away in search of food the crow went to the nest in desperation and breaking all the eggs, he threw them down. The cuckoo, finding all her eggs smashed, was mad with grief. She went to the crow and said, "Oh brother, we had always lived like friends. What made you break all my eggs?"

"Well sister, as you sang, the unknown traveller stayed the whole night. When I started cawing he left the place. I felt insulted and broke all your eggs. Now let us both go to the traveller and ask him why he did so."

So, both the birds flew and flew till they spotted the traveller. When the crow asked him, he replied, "I was carried away by the cuckoo's enchanting voice but your voice was intolerably harsh. So, I left the place. But both of you have been old friends, so you should always live in harmony. You should not feel jealous of your friend."

These words of the passerby pacified both cuckoo and the crow. After that day they lived peacefully. The just and kind words of a traveller destroyed the ill feeling of jealousy in the crow just as a sprinkling of a little cold water settles the boiling milk.

The Scarecrow had an idea. He told the lion to run through the field so he could escape the deadly flowers. Then the Scarecrow and the Tinman carried Dorothy and Toto out of the Poppy field.
After a while, they came to a river. There they found the Lion. He was lying asleep. The smell from the poppies was so strong that the lion had given up and fallen asleep.
the Scarecrow and the Tinman felt very sad. The Lion was very heavy so they could not carry him. They, then, left him there to sleep.

Narrative Text : “ The Pleasures of A quite Night “

Few people like to sit quietly at nighr in a lonely place and appreciate the beauty of the stillness and the darkness of night. I am one of those people. From a young age, I have had fascination for the night and darkness. Something about the stillness and darkness attracts me and I look forward to sitting still in the middle of the night, with only darkness and night creatures for company. I cannot think of a reason for this strange attachment . Weird ? you are forgiven if you think so.
Once I sat on the beach at night to appreciate the beauty. I was alone on the beach as it was close midnight . even the courting couples who sat there whispering sweet nothings were gone. I sat on the beach and faced the sea. It was calm and the waves were gentle. The moon was a cresent and lay over the ocean like luminous boat.it was standing on his boat and rowing slowly towards me. The night sky was filled with stars and the water below appeared black like the sky. In fact in some places, it seemed the sky touched the sea or rather as if they were one.

Undisturbed I watched the sea as the waces made gentle laps against the beach. I got up and walked along the sea to observe. As I walked along the beach I could hear tiny feet scurrying away, and I knew they were little crabs. I felt a little regretful for intruding into their domain and wishpered an apology. I looked into the water and saw a little lashes of light and knew them to be tiny luminous creatures reflecting the moon light.

Looking at the land I saw coconut palms as they stood majestically against the beach. As I watched I heard a sudden ‘thud’ which started me. I smiled in the darkness as I saw coconut bounce and roll into the sea. I saw it stop an inch from the water and then a gentle wave came and led it away. I looked at the coconut floating away and wondered where it would land and grow into a tree. “you must be proud of him” I wishpered to the tree who had contributed one more tree to mother nature.

Then I saw fisherman, whom I had seen earlier , beach his boat and jump on to the land. Almost immediately he began to haul out his knee and his catch. I smiled and waved to him and made my way to my car.
