Pattern 9 : N1 TrV N2+.....

Pattern 9 : N1 TrV N2 plus one:

· N2
· Aj
· Pronoun
· Av (of place),uninflected
· Verb , present participle
· Verb,past participle
· Prep phrase
· Inf phrase with to be Pattern 9 consist a choice of eight different forms in the final position.
Thses are illustrated as follows :
· The basketball team chose charlotte captain
· He considered her brilliant
· I thought the caller you
· We supposed him upstairs
· I imagined her eating
· I believed him stead
· We considered her in the way
· We thought chico to be a fine player

In this pattern the word in the last two positions imply an underlying sentence with be as its verb ot auxiliary. This is suggested by the way the illustrative sentence above can be changed in form while preserving same menaing :

· The basketball team chose charlotte to be captain
· He considered her to be brilliant
He considered that she was brilliant

· I thought the caller to be you
I thought that the caller was you

· We supposed him to be upstairs
We supposed that he was upstairs

· I imagined her to be seated
I believe that he was seated

· We considered her to be in the way
We considered that she was in the way

· We thought chico to be fine player
We thought that chico was a fine player.

As pattern 9 is most commonly exemplified by N2 in the final position we shall restrict our attention to this form pattern. Pattern 9 like its predecors pattern 8, has two objects following the verb. But if different from pattern in three aspects:

· In the order of objects the direct object comes first. In some sentence if we eliminate the second object, we are left with pattern 7, which contains only the direct object after the verb : “The basketball team chose charlotte.

the second object is called the objective complement, because it sompletes the direct object.

· In pattern 9 both objects have the same referent ; that is both charlotte and captain refers to the same person

· In pattern 9 only the first object the direct object can be made the subject a passive verb, we can transform the pattern sentence into : "Charlotte was chsen captain."
