Have you made a turtle or an elephant out of clay? This is the way many sculptors begin work on a large statue. They make a small model out of clay. Then they follow the same lines as they carve or mold their large pieces.
Sculptors often carve things they see around them. This might be a person or an animal. Some carve figures that show feeling, such as sorrow or happiness. Stil others carve figures that tell of an idea, such as power.
Marina Nunez del Prado, a famous sculptor of Bolivia , liked to make statues of figures from Bolivian Indian Stories. Her work remind us of a long times ago.
Edmonia Lewis was a sculptor from New York . She had a black father and an Indian mother. Her Indian name was Wildfire. Edmonia wanted her statues to show feelings.
One of her statues is called Hagar in the Wilderness. Hagar, a woman of the Bible and her son were forced to wander in the desert. Hagar’s face looks tired and sad. People who look at Edmonia’s statue understand how all women felt who have suffered. Do you think a statue can show the idea ?
